I guided the class through how to prepare and use customizable cast acrylic resin films as gap fills for glass objects. In preparation for the workshop, I familiarized myself with the process of making the cast acrylic resin fills. I followed the Bristow & Cutajar paper, “Archaeological Glass Conservation: Comparative Approaches and Practicalities of Using Acrylic.” Their article took Stephen Koob’s technique outlined in the paper “An Old Material, a New Technique: Casting Paraloid B-72 for Filling Losses in Glass,” and commented on what worked, didn’t work, and any modifications they found to be successful. For the day of the workshop, I prepared several cast acrylic resin in silicone molds: two of both types with no modifiers, one of each with fumed silica, and one of each with marble dust. During the workshop, I taught my classmates how to prepare the cast acrylic resin films, how to cut/shape the films, and how to fill using practice glass objects.
